Ecobank renovates 25-bed children’s ward

 Ecobank Sierra Leone has refurbished a 25-bed paediatric ward at the Connaught hospital. The children’s ward was adopted and named after a renowned paediatrician, Dr. D.J.O Robin-Coker.

45% salary increment for teachers- says MBSSE

A  Strategic Communication Analyst at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary School Education (MBSSE) Augustine Sankoh says there has been a forty-five percent increment on teacher’s salary.

He told Politico that agreement on the new pay for teachers was reached late yesterday following a meeting between the Minister Dr. David Sengeh and representatives of the Sierra Leone Teacher’s Union (SLTU). The increment will take effect in January 2023.

Illegal mining suspect released on bail

A man considered a supervisor of an illicit gold mining operation at Makai village in Kenema district has been granted bail by the police and released.

According to the Sierra Leone Police Information Officer for the Eastern Region, Inspector Brima James Musa, Daboh was arrested in a raid on the village by police officers, and personnel from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Precious Mineral Investigation Unit.

Calls to stop food ban

The Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Edward Hinga Sandy has called on countries that export food to refrain from imposing export prohibitions or restrictions on basic food products.

Sandy made this call during a ministerial conference in Geneva, Switzerland on the 13th  of June 2022; he said that such measure has the tendency to harm populations in the least Developed Countries (LDC) and delay the needed economic recovery.

Pujehun Police react to bribery allegations

Sierra Leone police in Pujehun District Southern Sierra Leone has in a press conference held in Pujehun Town denied allegations that they have released a suspect in their custody who has been accused of sexually penetrating a 14- year-old schoolgirl in the District. 

Sierra Leone dockworkers urged to call off strike

The Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA) has in a press statement urged all staff of the Freetown Terminal Limited (FTL) currently engaged in a sit-down strike to call it off immediately, while calling on the company to honour its obligation to pay End of Service benefits to those workers who are no longer interested in working with the company.

The statement, dated 14th June 2020, also said they are prepared to accept those who will want to continue in service with the company.

Call for the implementation of labour laws in SIerra Leone

The Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, Max K. Conteh, has called on the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to thoroughly execute the new labour laws to impact the lives of workers.    

He made the call during the final stakeholders’ consultative workshop on the review of the labour laws of Sierra Leone held at the Family Kingdom in Freetown on Tuesday 14th June 2022.
