SMEDA prepares staff for business development tasks

Workers of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (SMEDA) have undergone two days of training in Business Plan Development to build up their technical capacity and meet the criteria set by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for a pending project.  

Sierra Leone to focus on mechanized farming

President Julius Maada Bio has on the 19th June 2022 held bilateral discussions with the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani during which he expressed Sierra Leone’s focus on mechanized farming.   

President Bio said focus will be on agriculture through mechanized farming and private sector partnership, saying that with proper and accurate investment in agriculture, the country would become an exporting nation.

Sierra Leone rights commission demands to visit “Benghazi”

The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has demanded from the police that they be given unhindered access to the holding facility known as ‘Benghazi’ at the OSD headquarters at Kingharman Road in Freetown.

This came in the wake of the detention there and the alleged maltreatment of rapper Alhaji Amadu Bah and others, in relation to an alleged robbery incident at Leonco Gas station at Congo Cross some on 12 June.

Security sector warns against hate messages

The Security Sector through the Office of the National Security Adviser has issued a press release expressing alarm at what it said is the “growing spate of tribal and hate messages in the social media directed against certain ethnic groups of  Sierra Leone”.

Social media has in recent times been inundated with ethnic diatribes and disturbing inciting messages by people in and outside of the country.

EU wants Sierra Leone voters register updated

The European Union Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Manuel Muller has urged the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) to update the Voter Registration system for the 2023 general elections in clear terms and collaboration with the electoral stakeholders for a robust register.

MPs want more resignation time

Part of the Public Elections Act 2022 that proposes for an individual to hold on to their public offices and resign six months before contesting for elective political office, has been condemned   by members of parliament. They’ve called for an extension of the time. 

Debating the bill, the MPs frowned at the time- frame proposed in the bill and suggested that it be increased to eighteen months before elections. 

No bail for LAJ

The controversial hip-hop artist, Alhaji Amadu Bah aka LAJ was refused bail again after he appeared in front of a magistrate for the second time yesterday on four counts bordering on robbery with violence and assault.

His arrest on 12 June on allegations of attacking, beating up and robbing two pump attendants at a petrol station caused a stir after it emerged that his cascading dreadlocks had been shaved off under police custody.
