Njala University gets new principal

Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma has been appointed Principal for Njala University for a three years period starting in September 2022. Before this appointment as Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Koroma was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Njala Campus and Pro-Chancellor for Njala University. 

Kambia and Kabala to access improved water facilities

A pipe-borne water projects for residents of the towns of Kambia and Kabala is at an advanced stage, according to the Director of Projects and Management at the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) Ing. Yankuba Jusu Tarawally.

Tarawally explained to Politico that for Kambia the work has reached 75 percent, and 68 percent for Kabala.

Sierra Leone MPs discuss bill that proposes dissolution of smaller parties

Members of Parliament of the All People’s Congress (APC) party have raised concerns about the proposition made by the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) in a bill entitled Political Parties Regulation Commission Act 2022 that solicits the dissolution of smaller political parties that cannot secure a total of 2% of national votes.

Poverty and pregnancy linked to child marriage in Sierra Leone

Findings of a study conducted by Save the Children Sierra Leone under a project titled: “Ending Child Marriage (ECM)”, has revealed that pregnancy and poverty are the underlying causes of early child marriage in Sierra Leone. 

The qualitative study was conducted this year in Kissy Teng, Mandu, Peje Bongre, and Yawei Chiefdoms in the Kailahun district.

Pujehun probes pregnant woman’s death

The Criminal Investigations Department of the Police in Pujehun Town is currently investigating the death of a 45-year- old pregnant woman, Juma Koroma who died at the Pujehun Government hospital after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband’s relatives.

Plans to stop seed rice importation

The Executive Director of Sierra Leone Seed Certification Agency (SLESCA), Dr. Robert Chakanda has in an interview with Politico expressed the need for the government to discourage the importation of seed rice into the country.

Dr. Chakanda stated that the government has been importing seed rice from different countries, which he said was not sustainable. He stated that they have been investing huge finances into seed importation, but that the consignment always comes in late and the control system for quality was also poor.
