Sierra Leone drops in transparency ranking

Sierra Leone’s transparency ranking in financial accountability has dropped. This was highlighted in the final document prepared by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) on Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability Assessment for the year 2021, quoting Transparency International’s latest report.

Journalists’ safety committee launched

In realisation of the importance in ensuring the safety and security of journalists in the line of duty, Media Practitioners, Security Personnel, Civil Society activists, Government functionaries including those from the judiciary, and as well individuals from media regulatory and coordinating bodies, have in a meeting approved a draft document and a National Coordinating Committee to oversee the safety of journalist in Sierra Leone.

EU to support Sierra Leone parliament

Following several calls by the Leader of the main opposition party in Parliament, Chernor Maju Bah, for timely distribution of bills to members of parliament, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Manuel Muller, has said the EU will support the parliament and the government printing house to facilitate timely availability of bills to MPs and the public.

He made this promise at a pre-legislative hearing on the Local Government Act of 2021 bill at the house of parliament on Monday 4th July 2022. 

Sustainability Programme for CSOs in Sierra Leone

Solidaridad West Africa (SWA) in partnership with Trust Africa (TA) has ended a five-day intensive capacity-building workshop on the theme “Strengthening the Advocacy Capacity and Voice for Inclusive and Sustainable Supply Chains and Trade in Cocoa and Palm Oil,”

In his welcome address, Programme Manager Equitable Development at Trust Africa, Bethule Nyamambi, said the workshop is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the local CSOs to enhance their skills, knowledge, and voice to advocate for the rights of women through inclusive dialogues.

Mali Junta to quit in 2024

The leaders of Mali’s military regime have confirmed that the country will return to civilian rule in 2024.

A spokesman Abdoulaye Maiga announced on state television this week that the transition period for return to constitutional rule is set at 24 months as of 26th March 2022.

The announcement was from a decree endorsed by Junta leader Colonel Asssimi Goita.
