Sierra Leone parliament is third in OPI ranking

With smiling faces, Members of Parliament tapped their desks, expressing satisfaction after the maiden Open Parliament Index’s (OPI) ranking, placed the country’s Parliament third after Ghana and Cape Verde in West Africa.

The Speaker Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu on 22nd July 2022 told the House it was good news and made a commitment that the fifth parliament was determined to work hard in order to be ranked first in the next OPI rating before the life span of parliament ends.

Speaker of Parliament Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu has called on members of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) to keep the peace and maintain the Party’s unity against all odds.

 He made the call at an event held in Bo last weekend to welcome from sick leave the party’s Southern Region Chairman who is also the Minister of Energy Alhaji Kanja Sesay.  

Suspicious Container in police care

A sea cargo Container that landed at the Freetown Port is currently with the Police at Kingtom, fueling suspicion and debate after reports on social media alleging that the said 40 feet Container could be carrying narcotic drugs or the new Leone currency, went viral.

Speaking to Politico, the Head of Police Media and Public Relations Officer Assistant Commissioner Brima Kamara told Politico that the container in question is yet to be opened and so could not comment on what could be inside.

Sierra Leone lacks telecoms and data infrastructure – new report says

An assessment report has indicated that Sierra Leone’s data landscape does not make adequate provisions for telecommunications infrastructure development, availability, and uptake.

The research to assess the country’s data landscape and its use was conducted by the Ministry of Information and Communication through Global Development Advisory (GDA) with support from the Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL) and the Government of Sierra Leone.

SLAJ president braces up for second term

The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists and his executive members are set to take the association through the next three years with a new manifesto commitment called the MEAL manifesto.

The transition from the SALT Manifesto which stands for Stimulate/Strengthen, Appreciate, Listen/Learn, and Transfer, to the MEAL, the acronym for Mobilize, Evaluate, Allocate and Liberate was officiated on the 23rd of July in Bo at a retreat held to orientate the new executive.

Environment ministry consults women on environmental plans

The Ministry of Environment with support from UNDP on the 11th July 2022 held a regional consultation on the Development of a five-year Gender Sensitive Strategic Plan on environmental management in Kenema.

 The consultation targeted mostly women from different women groups that are engaged in environmental management through tree planting.

Sierra Leone trains women farmers in crop management

In an effort to ensure food sufficiency and management, the Movement towards Peace and Development Agency-Sierra Leone (MoPADA-SL) has trained over 40 women farmers drawn from 40 project communities in Yawei, Peje Bongre, Peje West, and Njaluahun Chiefdoms in Kailahun District on crop cultivation and nutritional management.
