UN calls for abolition of FGM

The United Nations (UN) human rights experts have urged the Government of Sierra Leone to establish a comprehensive set of legal prohibitions against the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) for the safety of women and girls in Sierra Leone. 

The call came from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights following the death of a 21-year-old student who was reportedly subjected to FGM in Bonthe district, southern Sierra Leone.

Still no allowance for Sierra Leone students in Pakistan

Freetown City Council refunds misappropriated money

The Anti-Corruption Commission has confirmed receipt of one hundred and eighty million Leones (old currency) through its non-conviction-based asset recovery process from the Freetown City Council (FCC) as a refund of the  monies that were flagged in the 2019 Auditor General’s Report to be ‘inappropriately’ paid from the Council’s funds.  

Le 1.5 billion for business groups in Sierra Leone

Disbursement of a Preparatory Grant of 1.5 Billion Leones for eight thousand Self Help Affinity Groups (SAGs) members has commenced in 13 districts across Sierra Leone.

The Communications Unit of the Bo District Office of the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), confirmed in a statement dated 25th August 2022 that the process which started last Monday is to end on Friday 2nd September.

430 get technical skills in Kenema

430 youths on the 27th of August 2022, graduated in various skills  training courses from the Eastern Technical University (ETU) in Kenema through funding support from World Bank that was facilitated by the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education.

They graduated in programmes such as tailoring, solar restoration, plumbing, electrical installation, carpentry and joinery, block laying, catering, dressmaking and decoration, and computer designing.    

Sierra Leone Roads Authority to criminalise overloading

The Communication Specialist at the Sierra Leone Roads Authority, Keifa Jaward, has said the institution is formulating a policy that will ensure a fine is issued for the overloading of vehicles plying within the country. 

Speaking to Politico, Jaward said the process will be done by placing devices on the roads that will scan a vehicle and detect if it is overloaded beyond its registered capacity.

This according to him is intended to deter overloading, which he said contributes to the destruction of roads.
