Schools reopen today in Sierra Leone

After over a month's break in school sessions across Sierra Leone, pupils and their teachers will today return to the classrooms for the commencement of the 2022/2023 academic year.

The Minister of Basic and Senior School Education (MBSSE) in a social media post urged parents, students, and teachers to show up early, eager, and ready to learn, noting that its starts on day one.

US, partners to light up Sierra Leone health centres

In an effort to improve access to electricity in 31 health facilities located in remote areas of Sierra Leone, the United States Government and partners are set to power up 31 health centres in remote communities of Sierra Leone through the Health Grid project.

Speaking at a press briefing on the project and other US-sponsored programmes in the country on the 31st of August, the US Ambassador to Sierra Leone David Reimer expressed optimism that the installations will be completed this year.

New Infantry Brigade Commander takes up office

The outgoing 3 Infantry Brigade Commander on Friday 2nd August 2022 handed over office to his successor; Brigadier General AS Bockarie at a ceremony held at the 3 Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Murry Town.

 The outgoing Commander, Major General D Alpha received a Quarter Guard Parade after which he officially handed over the 3Brigade flag of office to his successor.

3 remanded for Angola Town robbery

Magistrate Isata Sellu-Tucker of Pademba Road Court No. 2 in Freetown has remanded Sorie Turay, Abubakarr Sesay alias “Cartel”, and Rashid Rogers alias “Shylion” for allegedly robbing Fayia Moseray of money and properties worth thousands of the new Leone currency. 

The accused persons appeared before the court to answer to charges of robbery with aggravation, conspiracy, felony, wounding, wounding with intent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm country to laws of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone confirms 31 deaths in violent 10 August protests

An internal document obtained by Politico shows that 31 people were killed during the violent antigovernment protests on 10 August in parts of Freetown and the north, up from the 27 that was earlier reported.

25 of them were civilians and six were policemen, with the youngest being nine years old and the oldest 67.

They are believed to be the highest police and civilian protest-related casualties in a single day in peacetime Sierra Leone. Four of the deaths were females.

US Peace Corps volunteers return to Sierra Leone

Ahead of the official swearing-in and dispatching of 17 Peace Corps Volunteers, the American Ambassador to Sierra Leone has expressed joy that the volunteers have returned to the country to support the community with Health Care and Primary and Secondary Education Services.

Ambassador David Reimer noted that after the swearing-in ceremony, they will be sent into communities across eight districts in Sierra Leone to work together with local partners on health and education.

Sierra Leone pumps Le 500 billion into education

The Deputy Director in the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) John K. Ansumana updating journalists on the outcome of the school census has said that the Government of Sierra Leone has spent NLe 510,300,383 on the Free Quality Education (FQE) programme.
