Wife gets 5 years imprisonment for killing husband

High Court Judge, Aiah Simeon Allieu has sentenced Christiana Monikor to five years imprisonment after she was found guilty of murdering her husband, Moses Koroma at Waterloo, outside of Freetown. 

The sentence includes time spent at the Correctional Centre while the trial was going on, according to Justice Allieu, after listening to the plea of litigation on Thursday 15th September.

Farmer’s Cooperative to boost Agricultural productivity

Farmers in Kenema have launched a farmers’ cooperative called Yakineh that is geared towards bringing farmers together for better agricultural productivity.

The launching which took place on the 15th of September 2022 at the City Council hall, in Kenema captured farmers’ groups from Dodo, Simbaru, Kandu- Leppiama, Lower Bambara, Wandor, and Gorama Mende Chiefdoms. The theme for the launch was: ‘’supporting bulk marketing sales’’.

Disabled students empowered for new academic year

In a bid to empower 170 Children and Youngsters with Disabilities (CYwDs), The Dorothy Springer Trust (DST) in collaboration with One Family People (OFP) and support from Lillian Foundation has supported students with school learning materials, medication and other services to assist them in the 2022-2023 academic year.

The distribution happened on Friday 16th September at the head office of DST at the Freetown Cheshire Home in Freetown.

Sierra Leone develops pregnancy-tracking app

Sierra Leone’s The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), headed by the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has developed a Pregnancy Registration and Service Tracking (PresTrack) app.

The app will be used to register, track and monitor complications in pregnancy and neonates, among other things.

Civil society gives thumbs down to new Sierra Leone mining law

The Natural Resource Governance and Economic Justice Network in Sierra Leone (NaRGEJ-SL) has in a press statement expressed dissatisfaction that after more than three years of broad consultations on the review of the Mines and Minerals Act 2009, civil society is deeply disappointed that the new mining law falls far short of expectations.

The statement was presented yesterday 15 September during a press conference at the headquarters of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists in Freetown.

Sierra Leone opposition politician released on bail

Member of Parliament for the main opposition All People's Congress party representing Constituency 066 in Karene district, Mohamed Bangura, and the Chairperson of the party in Tonkolili district, Yabom Sesay, have each been granted a five hundred thousand Leone (NLe 500,000) bail following five counts charges levied against them.

The bail condition levied was that each accused should have a surety 40 year-old and over and with a property valued three hundred and fifty thousand Leones (NLe 350,000), and proof of utility bills.

FBC students get new president

Provisional results coming from the Fourah Bay College (FBC) Students' Union (SU) Elections indicate that Alfred Micah Sesay, a year three student at the Law Department , has won the September15th  2022 election with 477votes, representing 71.51%, while his only opponent, Salamatu Kakay, got 187 votes, representing 28.04%.

  The provincial result further indicated that the valid votes casted were 664 out of 667 total votes.
