Affected property owners in Kono to appeal High Court ruling

Lawyers for the Marginalised Affected Property Owners (MAPO) of Kono, Eastern Sierra Leone are set to appeal the decision of High Court Judge Unisa Kamara J. in a class action law suit against a Diamond Mining Company named Koidu Limited.

The High Court of Sierra Leone which sat in Makeni Northern Leone on Thursday 27th October 2022 delivered the long-awaited ruling on the matter between the affected property owners in the diamond mining district of Kono, and the company. 

Displaced disabled Kenema fire victims appeal for help

Disabled persons whose houses were destroyed in fire incident in Kenema on 28th August this year have asked humanitarians organizations and philanthropists in the country to come to their aid, as they go through numerous difficulties.

A fire had gutted the building they were occupying close to the Kenema Correctional Centre.

ECOWAS Parliamentary Oversight Mission Visits NEWMC-SL

On Thursday 27th October 2022, the National Early Warning and Response Mechanism Coordinating Centre Sierra Leone NEWMC-SL received a visiting delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliamentary Oversight Mission during which they discussed the work the centre has been doing since its establishment in 2021.

The Head of the ECOWAS delegation, the Fourth Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Adja Satu Camara Pito, said she was pleased to see women holding higher positions in the office.

CSOs call for an inclusive PR system in 2023 election in Sierra Leone

A coalition of civil society organisations comprising the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR), Fifty-Fifty Group (50/50) and Center for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL) has called for an inclusive Proportional Representation (PR) system in the 2023 general elections.

They made the call to the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) in a press release issued on the 24 October, 2022.

Confusion over UAE visa ban for Sierra Leone travellers

There is confusion over reports that the government of the United Arab Emirates has slammed a visa ban on Sierra Leoneans with immediate effect. The report which emerged on social media on Monday gave no reasons for the ban which also affects 19 other countries in sub-Saharan Africa apart from the issue of people on tourist visas overstaying in Dubai.

A senior official of the Foreign Ministry in Freetown described the report as rumour making the rounds on social media
