Sierra Leone MP calls for proceedings to be stalled until welfare met

Member of Parliament representing Constituency 032 Mark Mahmoud Kalokoh has proposed that the House should stall all deliberations, if their welfare issues were not addressed.

Reacting yesterday to House Speaker Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu’s expressed dissatisfaction over parliament’s appropriation status, Kalokoh explained that parliament as an arm of government should not allow itself to be handicapped by another arm of government.

Poverty rocks Sierra Leone media – new report says

A State of the Media Report published by the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) covering the period 2018 to 2021 says media poverty still continues to hinder the progress of the media landscape in Sierra Leone.

The report was launched on Monday 5th December, 2022 at the MRCG’s Secretariat at Circular Road in Freetown.

World Bank doles out $100M to Sierra Leone

The Government of Sierra Leone is set to receive 100 million dollars from the World Bank to help enhance accountability and transparency in public finance and improve on the country’s natural resource management.

The Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on Monday 5th December 2022 approved the funding which is the Second Inclusive and Sustainable Growth Development Policy Financing (DPF).

Sierra Leone launches new passport, naturalizes 109 as citizens

Copies of an upgraded version of Sierra Leone’s passport have been presented to President Julius Maada Bio and Vice President Dr.Mohamed  Juldeh Jalloh. According to State House Communications Unit, Chief Immigration Officer , Andrew Jaiah Kaikai presented the  passports to the first two gentlemen of the republic in Freetown.

The new passport is said to have special security features which makes it difficult to be forged or duplicated. 

Sierra Leone’s president is Africa Leadership’s Person of the Year

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has grabbed the 11th African Leadership person of the year award with a total score of 68%.

He emerged winner in the overall category with the poll attracting a combined total vote of over 15,000 and over 1 million active online engagements during the voting period.

The close of the poll was on Friday 2nd December, 2022, at midnight Central African Time.

Chaos in land management in Sierra Leone’s capital, says new IGR report

The Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) has launched a report on issues of land management in Sierra Leone, citing various challenges on land acquisition and the effects on the livelihood of residents during the process.

The report named: “The Freetown Disasters: rethinking Sierra Leone’s approach to land reform”, focuses on the Freetown land market, the political economy affecting land and housing reform, climate change and natural disasters.

8 Njala lab personnel to receive training

Eight Njala laboratory personnel are currently receiving training in molecular entomological techniques for malaria vector control.

The training which commenced on the 28th November 2022 will end tomorrow 8th December 2022. It is expected to equip technicians with knowledge on molecular entomological techniques to support mosquito surveillance.
