RSLAF top brass meet on improving capability

Military officers from the rank of lieutenant and above are meeting in Freetown to discuss how they can improve the capability of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) amidst the general societal challenges.

Minister of Defence, Retired Brigadier- General Kellie Hassan Conteh addressed the officers at the commencement of a two- day Military Command Group Conference, yesterday at the Myohaung Officers Mess, Wilberforce Barracks in Freetown, .

170 disabled children empowered with assistive materials

In a bid to empower 170 children and youngsters with disabilities, the Dorothy Springer Trust (DST) has joined One Family People (OFP) through support from Lillian Foundation in providing assistive technology devices, learning materials, and home care items, to the young people.

Presentation of the items which took place on Wednesday December 14 at the Freetown Cheshire Home, Cline Town in Freetown, is the last quarterly assistance for 2022.

ACC generates 5 billion new Leones from corruption fines

The Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) has pver the last three years recovered 5 billion Leones through fines levied against persons found culpable by the commission’s Court.

The Judiciary in a press release this week said the ACC court the first in the region specializing in Anti –Corruption cases, processed forty-seven cases in 2021, completing twenty-four of them.

Twenty-seven persons were found guilty and were ordered to pay fines that went into the Consolidated Fund.

Bio talks energy with Rockefeller foundation

Shah, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, an American private philanthropic medical research and arts funding organisation, on possibilities around sustainable energy in Sierra Leone. The meeting took place in Washington in the United States.

USLTHC calls for autonomy

Chairperson of the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospital Complex (USLTHC) Dr. Sonia Spencer has called for autonomy of the institution’s Board for better performance.

 Speaking at a parliamentary sub-appropriation meeting yesterday, the medic said the board is not in total control of the six hospitals which form the teaching hospitals complex which contravenes what is stipulated in the Act that the board should take responsibility.

World Bank Donates $50million

The World Bank has provided the Government of Sierra Leone with a grant of $50million to support a five -year digital transformation project following signing of a financial agreement in July 2022 and meeting the International Development Association requirement.

The Minister of Information and Communications Mohamed Rahman Swaray took to his twitter account to disclose this information after World Bank announced same.

Freetown’s tree planting panacea to climate change

In August 2017, a hillside on the outskirts of Freetown, Sierra Leone’s crowded capital city, collapsed causing a mudslide that killed more than 1,100 people and caused more than $14 million USD in damage. Mustapha Dumbuya, 40, lived in the Juba area very close to the catastrophe. He said, “I saw huge mansions and ‘pan-bodies’ (zinc and stick buildings) on the hill come sliding down. I had neighbours washed away in the rushing waters. I saw the land kicked off the hill by heavy rains and I’m lucky to be alive.”
