Sierra Leone to tap into private sector for improved health

Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh PhD has expressed the government’s intention to tap into opportunities offered by the private sector in the area of health.

The Vice President was speaking during an engagement with the private sector partners held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown on Monday 3rd April 2023.

After highlighting some of the projects the private sector has been undertaking towards supporting government efforts in the health sector, he also thanked them for their continued support.

Sierra Leone increases vehicle owners' tax to Le 200,000 yearly

The Newly enacted Finance Act 2023 mandates vehicle owners in Sierra Leone to pay two hundred thousand old Leones annually per vehicle as an annual circulation levy.  The Act was yesterday 4th April 2023 passed into law by the house of Parliament.

The Commissioner-General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) Samuel Jibao and the Minister of Finance Sheku F. Bangura both at the pre-legislative hearing parliament on the 3rd of April 2023 asserted that the move is to generate revenue for the government.

Man convicted for fraud in Makeni

Justice Unisa Kamara of the Makeni High Court has sentenced Alimamy Kabbia  Chairman of a social group based in Makeni called “Like Minds,” to two years and six months imprisonment or pay a fine of NLE 5000 (Five thousand new Leones) to the state for embezzling the group’s fund.

The trial of Dr. Samura Kamara, presidential candidate of the main opposition APC part, is set to resume today following the visit by the court to New York to inspect the Chancery Building whose renovation is under probe. 

The judge and prosecution and defence lawyers on the 23 March inspected the building.

Sierra Leone parliament recommends 15 years in jail for operators of fake universities

The Special Select Committee on Fake Degrees has recommended that jail term and fines be imposed on persons who run tertiary institutions without accreditation from Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

In the report placed on the table of parliament on the 30th March 2023, the committee recommendation that a section on sanction should be added in the TEC Act, wherein persons and institutions who decide to operate without approval should face punishment.

Sierra Leone fishermen accuse industrial fishing boats of illegal practices

Artisanal Fishermen in Sierra Leone have accused industrial fishing vessels mainly operated by Chinese and Koreans of illegal fishing practices.

This was revealed at the launch of Sierra Leone Film Summit, that screened a documentary with the title ‘The New Boat’ produced by ‘Freetown Media Centre. The event was held at the Freetown City Hall Auditorium on Friday 31st March, 2023.
