Judiciary assures no delay in election cases

Chief Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards has assured the nation of speedy adjudication of cases related to electoral offences. He made this statement on the 21st of June 2023 at the launch of the second compendium of laws on elections.

Speaking on the purpose of the compendium of laws, the Chief Justice explained that sometimes when lawyers present cases, they encounter difficulties to get the source material, which according to him can cause delay. He added that was why they decided to get a fuller compendium of laws.

NCD calls for Political tolerance

Following days of reported election violence across the country, the National Commission for Democracy (NCD) has condemned all forms of ‘arbitrariness and lawlessness’ and called for political tolerance in Sierra Leone.

The commission made this call in a press release dated 22nd June 2023 following the successful conclusion of stakeholders’ engagements across the country.

President Bio encourages citizens to vote

Call for effective conflict resolution mechanisms

West African Youth for Peace (WAYFP), an advocacy group has urged the government, Political Parties, and other Electoral Management Bodies in Sierra Leone to create conflict resolution mechanisms to address grievances.

The organisation in a press statement dated 20th June 2023; explained that they should ensure that they create avenues to address potential disputes or grievances that could arise from the electoral process.

APC accuses state security of killing their member

Both Police and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) have given varied accounts of events around the precinct of the party’s Old Railway Line, Freetown headquarters on Wednesday 21st June, following a planned March by APC supporters.

APC’s Publicity Secretary, Sidi Yayah Tunis accused Police and Military personnel of being responsible for the death of one of their members that day.
