Sierra Leone security sector commits to investigate threats

The Security Sector and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have signed a communiqué agreeing that the sector should ensure swift investigation of cases of online threats and violence of a political nature.

The communiqué was signed in an engagement organized by Fambul Tok International on the 1st of August 2023. The communiqué urges the “Security sector to be proactive and facilitate timely investigation of all reported cases of threat or violence during political events including sub-national and national elections”.

Police witness denies planting weapon on accused

Sergeant Abdul Francis Morlu attached to the Bo Police Division, has denied suggestions that police officers planted a weapon on Alpha Sheriff commonly known as APC Sheriff, in an ongoing alleged illegal possession of small arms case at a Magistrate Court in Freetown.

Sierra Leone increases fuel price by16%

The pump price of Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene has been increased from 21.50 New Leones to 25 New Leones, according to a new price list announced by the Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) last evening.

 It comes just as the Supplementary Budget was presented to Parliament on Monday by Finance Minister Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura.

Another mutilated body found in Waterloo

Police at the Waterloo Division have discovered the mutilated corpse of 24-year-old Ibrahim Jagitay, a shop owner at AllenTown, East-end of Freetown at Kellie Farm, Malambay Village in Waterloo.

The corpse was found on the 29th July, 2023.

Sierra Leone cyber lab is 2nd best in Africa – says police chief

The Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu has said that the country’s cyber lab is the second best in Africa after South Africa and has called on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and members of the public to report cyber threats.

IGP Sellu made this call on the 1st August 2023 during a dialogue convened by Fambul Tok International for CSOs and the security sector to address concerns around the actions of political parties, police, election observers and rights-based groups.

MP urges Sierra Leone Govt to kickstart Kono University

Member of Parliament for Kono District Rebecca Yei Kamara has urged the Government to ensure Kono University of Science and Technology commences foundation courses in September this year.

The MP made this call on the 31st July 2023 whilst debating on the supplementary budget in parliament. She expressed her desire that the twelve million new Leones allocated to the Ministry of Tertiary and Higher Education (MTHE) will contribute to the operations of the university.  

Turmoil in Sierra Leone female journalists' association

The Sierra Leone Association of Women in Journalism (SLAWIJ) appears to be in turmoil after a press release from the new Board of the Association which decided to terminate the tenure of the interim executive effective 1st August 2023 for alleged acts of misconduct relating to corporate governance.

According to the release, which was signed by the body's corporate secretary and issued on the 31 July, the new board took action against the executive on the grounds that they have overstayed their mandate of six months.
