87% say Sierra Leone economy is very bad – IGR report

87% of Sierra Leoneans are worried about the current state of the economy and the continuous hike in prices of food and other essential commodities; this is according to the Executive Director of the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) Andrew Lavali.

He said that nearly nine out of ten Sierra Leoneans are concerned about the economy of the country, as he released the IGR survey report at a press conference on the 14th of September 2023.

Sierra Leone’s 9/11 protesters in court

Thirty-three (33) alleged protesters arrested in connection to the 2023 September 11 protests have appeared at a Magistrate Court in Freetown.

The accused persons Abubakarr Kargbo, Ibrahim Amidu Jalloh, Mohamed Kamara, and Sulaiman Bangura were arraigned at the Ross Road Court No.3 before Magistrate Hadiru Daboh on Thursday 14th September 2023.

The others are Fatmata Sesay, Alisha Kanu, Fatmata Conteh, Ibrahim Sorie Sesay, Lukman Yayah, and David Johnson among others.

Sierra Leone targets 30% female teacher workforce

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) Conrad Sackey has asserted that the ministry will increase female teachers’ recruitment to 30% in the country.

He made this disclosure whilst updating the media on their activities at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education's Weekly Press Conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on the 12th of September 2023.

Sierra Leone youth engage in drug abuse awareness

Foundation for Rural and Urban Transformation (FoRUT) in partnership with Creating Opportunities for Disadvantaged Persons (CODaP) and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MODS) have trained 30 youths as Counsellors on substance abuse and mental health.

The three-day training programme held at the Buxton Church in Freetown commenced on Tuesday 12 and ended yesterday 14th September 2023.

 The youths were drawn from different communities within the capital to serve as counsellors in their various communities.

Minister warns against scholarship scam

The Minister of Technical and Higher Education Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie has warned the public against falling for scammers who disguise and claim to be authorities in the sector in order to extort money from the public by asking for money as a requirement for international scholarship and grant-in-aid opportunities.

Medical screening required for ETU entry – Registrar

As part of the entry requirement into the Eastern Technical University (ETU), John Juana Registrar of the University has said that every new student at the university will be required to undergo a medical screening before admission.

He made the statement on the 11th of September 2023 at the official launch of a health facility called Express Care Medical Clinic in Kenema.
