The Chairperson, Committee on Gender and Children’s Affairs in Parliament, Cathrine Zainab Tarawally has said Parliament will work to ensure that they pass a law that will increase maternal leave from 3 to six months.
Tarawally was speaking at the Atlantic Hotel on 31stb July, ahead of the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, which commenced on the 1st of August, and to end on 7th August next week.

Former Guinean Junta leader, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara has been jailed for 20 years after a court found him guilty of crimes against humanity in relation to the killing of more than 150 people in a stadium in the capital, 15 years ago.
Jailed alongside him was his head of Police, Moussa Tiegboro Camara who also got a 20 year sentence. Five others were jailed including Camara’s former head of the presidential guard, Aboubacar ‘’Toumba’’ Diakite’ who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Thorllu Bangura, who was a bodyguard to former president Ernest Bai Koroma says he is innocent of charges of conspiracy to commit mutiny, murder and other related offences at the ongoing court martial.
The 21st accused was testifying from the dock on Monday July 29, 2024. He rejected the allegation that he was in Freetown between November 25 and 26, 2023 and also denied the allegation that he sent a WhatsApp voice note.

The Coordinator of the Blue Economy Project at the non-governmental organisation GOAL Sierra Leone, Benjamin Bockarie has called for the establishment of community by-laws to prevent the cutting down of mangrove trees along the coastal communities, in a bid to mitigate climate issues.
Bockarie made this call on the 30th July 2024 at the launch of the institution’s Blue Economy project to enhance the resilience of rural communities through women-led conservation financial inclusion and livelihood diversification project.

In Commemoration of International Human Trafficking Day, 30th July, the Media Officer for Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Force Secretariat, John-John Whitfield told Politico that they have increased human trafficking prevention mechanisms in the country.
The yearly commemoration is to raise awareness, and for the government to make commitments toward combating trafficking.
