Three public officials and one civil society member have been released on bail after they were briefly detained and interrogated by police for allegedly stealing five solar panels meant for the rehabilitated under-five children’s hall.

A trader, who sells along a prohibited area on Sani Abacha Street in Freetown, has been sentenced to a fine of Le 75, 000 or must go jail for two months.

Adama Koroma, who deals in cosmetics, was arraigned before Magistrate Davies Cole of Court No. 5 in Freetown. She was arrested with two boxes containing cosmetics at Abacha Street last Friday.

She pleaded guilty to the charges and was subsequently convicted and sentenced.

A final year student of the English Department at Fourah Bay College was yesterday remanded at the Pademba Road prisons in Freetown on allegations of fraud.

Jaward Borbor Khalil, 23, stood before Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No.2 on ten counts of conspiracy to defraud, forgery, altering forged documents and obtaining money by false pretences.

Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountant in Sierra Leone (ICASL) has called on government to hands-off the operations of universities and allow them to run as autonomous institutions and enhance performance.

Dr. William Tucker, the guest speaker at this year’s annual awards banquet at the Bank Complex, Kingtom in Freetown, said more investment was needed towards tertiary institutions and that “the university [of Sierra Leone] should never be for sale, irrespective of the economic scarcity to run it”.
