Political Parties support Constitutional Review

All 10 political parties in Sierra Leone have pledged their unwavering support for the on-going review of the country’s 1991 constitution which is presently underway. This, they did at a one-day political engagement by the Political Parties’ Registration Commission (PPRC) with support from UNDP in Freetown.

Calls to probe Paramount Chief

Some people of Gbangbatoke village in the southern Moyamba district have called on the anti-corruption commission to come after their Paramount Chief, John Jibao Russel-Nyama II, for “petty theft of chiefdom property and abuse of office”.

Both Michael Albert Margai and Mustapha Fofanah made these allegations in public and at a well-attended Town Barrie meeting held by Edward Stile Jengo, the parliamentarian representing that part of the country.

Over Ebola, Pujehun boycotts Airtel tourney

The Pujehun District Football Association (PDFA) has pulled out of this year's Airtel Rising Stars competition scheduled for 10 July, 2014 in the eastern town of Kenema.

The Secretary General of the association, Mohamed Koroma disclosed to Politico that they were withdrawing because of the presence of Ebola in the east of the country. "The health of our players is the most paramount concern to us" he said.

Koroma said they had already informed the organisers of their decision.

SNA workers sue Govt of Sierra Leone

Former workers of the Sierra National Airlines (SNA) have dragged the Government of Sierra Leone to the ECOWAS Court in Nigeria.

A lawyer acting for the aggrieved former workers, Maurice Garber says the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has already been served the full application by the Registrar of the court and that he has 30 days within which to respond. Once that is done a date will be fixed for the matter to come up in the court which is based in Abuja.

China Kingho man in jail for 'rape'

A Justice of the Peace sitting in the Magistrates Court in Pujehun has remanded in prison the liaison officer of the iron ore miner, China Kingho investment company limited to await an appearance before a magistrate on the 4 July on allegations of having sex with a minor.

J.P James Momodu Samba ordered that Amadu Sesay be arraigned before Magistrate Alford Fidawi because "I have no power to conduct the preliminary investigations into this matter".

Brewery complains over foreign products

Trade and Marketing Manager at the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, Desmond George, has raised concerns over the influx of foreign beer products into the country saying “it is greatly affecting the operation of the company and the competition is killing us”.

Speaking at a press conference at the company’s head office in Freetown, he said they were not protected by law as the country’s only brewery company, adding that in the cause of their operation the company had employed over 17,000 people nationwide.
