Woman testifies against mother in-law

By Mohamed Ayoub Conteh

Mariama Sesay, wife of late Ibrahim Sesay, has on Wednesday testified before Magistrate Sahr Kekura in Freetown, in an ongoing preliminary investigations into a one-count charge of malicious damage brought up against Memunatu Sesay, her mother in-law.

Led in evidence by Police Constable 19864, the witness said that she lives with her mother in-law (the accused) and her two children at No 9 Lumley Road in Freetown. She went on to note that the issue between herself and the accused started some two years back when her husband died and things became sour between them.

She said that her mother in-law has always blamed her for her son’s death and constantly refers to her as a bad omen to not only his son but the family at large. She maintained that she had always known that she was not in the good books of her mother in-law because even before her husband passed away, the accused wanted to bring another wife for her son and eventually remove her (the complainant) from the house, which she resisted.

Madam Sesay went on to note that on the 2nd December, 2020, she was visited by one of her friends whom she confided in and explained to her what she’s been sailing through, which was overheard by the accused who was inside the house. She further told the court that as they were conversing, her mother in-law came out and started insulting her in front of her friend, calling her a witch and a bastard and even released curses on her and her children.

‘‘Later her daughter Rugiatu Sesay came out and started abusing my mother and I told her that if she continued, I would abuse hers as well. But she didn’t stop and we started abusing our parents and it ended up in a fight. During the course of the fighting with her daughter, the accused hit me with a big stick on my right arm and I was badly in pain and I later reported the matter to the Lumley Police Station. She said she later had treatment at the Connaught Hospital.

The accused was represented by Lawyer Williams Illoba and the matter was adjourned to the 11th January 2021.
