Communications Officer of the UN World Food Programme says her organisation is in full support of the government’s plans to enforce a 3-day lockdown which starts on Friday.
Nyka Alexander told Politico that her agency had been partnering with the government and participating in the development of campaigns to help stop the further spread of the virus in the country.
“I think the Sierra Leone government’s initiative to stop the movement of its citizens for three days is a good step in the right direction”, she said, adding that they would continue to support the government’s strategies for the possible eradication of the deadly virus in the country.
She noted that the situation was getting worse and "out of hands...amidst efforts to stop its spread and contain it”.
“We are seeing more cases every day, every week” Nyka said, adding that the WHO could not say the situation was getting better in Sierra Leone until the number of positive cases had gone down.
However, the UN official noted that the governments of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia needed to intensify their fights to completely eradicate the Ebola virus from the sub-region.
