Acting US Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Kathleen FitzGibbon, yesterday handed over five Toyota Land Cruiser ambulances to the government of Sierra Leone as part of her country's contribution to fight the Ebola disease. Already the US Centres for Disease Control is involved in the fight.
At a ceremony at State House, FitzGibbon told President Ernest Bai Koroma that the United States was fully committed to supporting Sierra Leone and Liberia in the eradication of Ebola.
She said her country would withdraw vehicles from other missions around the world to support the government here, adding that even the five ambulances were withdrawn from other missions to be donated to Sierra Leone.
She said that since the Ebola outbreak in the country her embassy had been supporting the Emergency Operations Centre, especially in the supply of Personal Protection Equipment, PPEs.
She said her government was embarking on a programme to build partnership with their European Union counterparts to put up a "robust campaign" against the deadly disease.
Before handing over the keys to the vehicles, FitzGibbon said the Embassy had also provided some ambulances to the Emergency Operations Centre to facilitate their job in the areas of contact tracing and collection of information.
