Parliament, on 19 August 2014, ratified a grant agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and the International Development Association (IDA), the administrators of Global Partnership for Education Fund.
The US$ 23 million grant will finance the revitalisation of educational development projects will help Sierra Leone improve its educational system and will target, among other things, the construction of 30 classrooms and the rehabilitation of another 20, across the country.
Helen Kuyembeh, SLPP MP, said “the grant shows that government is thinking of education” adding that she was happy for the inclusion of “pre-school system is included in the grant”.
Chief Whip, Claude Kamanda, MP, said the implementation of the project “should be monitored very well, and the issue of books and learning materials laid to rest.” He said school data should correspond with what were in the ministries of finance and education.
He furthered that “a better census should be conducted on this programme” and warned that “councils should be involved from the implementation stage so they would take responsibility and stop giving excuses when they are questioned.”
Minority Leader, Dr. Bernadette Lahai, MP, urged her colleague MPs to do all they could to ensure standards of a good educational system were upheld. “No money is too big for it to be spent on education,” she said adding that “Education is at the pivot of creation, it opens themind.”
Komba Koideyoma, MP, said the ministry of education should provide sources that would benefit the young generation, and not only those that would provide while collar jobs.
However, Parliament Leader, Ibrahim Bundu raised questions over the Ebola crisis the country was currently grappling with. He said in the country’s time of crisis its friends “have cancelled flights and asked their nationals to travel back home.”
