Two new MPs join Sierra Leone Parliament

By Mohamed Jaward Nyallay

Parliament in Sierra Leone has sworn in two new Members of Parliament. The new members, Paramount Chief Alhaji Kandeh Paria Kawolleh II of Karene District and Hamidu Holla Mansaray of Constituency 043 in Koinadugu District were both sworn in on Tuesday, 28th October.

The MPs are in parliament as replacement for two former members who passed away this year.

P.C Alhaji Kawolleh replaced P.C Kandeh Wusu Sesay III, whiles Hamidu Holla Mansaray replaced his late father, Momodu Eskimo Mansaray, following the conduct of a bye-election last month.

Following their swearing in as per procedure, the two new MPs were handed the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone and the Standing Orders of Parliament - a set of guidelines and procedures.

With these new replacements, the house now has only one vacant seat, that of former MP Kadija Davies. Davies of Constituency 110 which she is contesting for the second time following a court ruling that nullified her 2018 election.

The rerun has already been conducted but was controversially cancelled by the National Electoral Commission following outbreak of violence. No date has been announced yet for another rerun.
