The ruling SLPP candidate has won the Kailahun constituency 010 bye-election. Provisional results signed by the Regional returning officer, Eastern region, Commissioner Marian Sia Nyuma Moijueh indicate that Zainab Kama Brima took over 70% of the votes, followed by an independent candidate Ibrahim Sylvester Jusu Hengela with 21% and the APC’s John Allieu with 8%.
According to NEC figures turnout was 56%.
Campaigning was marred by the killing of a teenager Foday Morie, described as a supporter of independent candidate, Ibrahim Sylvester Jusu Hengela. He accused supporters of the SLPP candidate of killing Morie.
Hengela says he contested as an independent candidate because he was unhappy with the way the party symbol was awarded as “it was not done in line with the party’s constitution.”
