The rerun election for the position of Women’s leader for the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has been won by Hawa Foray.
Foray polled 173 votes, defeating the popular incumbent Fatmata Sawaneh who got 124 votes in the election that was shifted to Freetown, following inconclusive voting in Kailahun last week. Third was Fatmata Bockarie with 15 votes. A fourth candidate Josephine Jackson stepped down a few hours before polling started, declaring her support for Sawaneh. The election was held at Catco Conference Centre in Freetown on Wednesday 2 December, 2021.
The first voting in Kailahun on the 27th November this year ended in dispute, with accusations of poor conduct of the process. Sawaneh told Politico the Kailahun election was not free and fair.
She had questioned the composition of the delegates list, claiming there were some people who were not eligible to vote. President Julius Maada Bio had earlier advised the delegates to be careful in electing their leader.
