President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has congratulated the new German Chancellor on his election to that office. In his letter dated 13th December 2021, President Bio described the victory of Chancellor Olaf Scholz as a ‘manifestation of the trust and confidence the people of Germany have in the manifesto to lead that great nation’.
President Bio further expressed his determination to work closely with the new Chancellor to further deepen the ‘excellent bilateral relations between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Federal Republic of Germany’.
It could be recalled that the Republic of Sierra Leone established diplomatic relations with Germany immediately after Independence in 1961. Sierra Leone opened her consulate in the port city of Hamburg to boost trade relations between the two countries.
Observers say President Bio is determined to improve relations with one of the most powerful countries in Europe for the mutual benefit of both countries.
The September 2021 Federal elections in Germany to elect members of the Bundestag were conducted peacefully. The incumbent, Angela Merkel did not take part. The Opposition (SDP) secured a slim victory in the tightly contested elections and recently formed the new Federal Government.
On 8th December 2021, the new Chancellor Olaf Scholz took over the reins of power in the Federal Republic of Germany in a live televised ceremony and presented his new cabinet to be sworn in.
