Sierra Leonean students win international innovation award

Students representing different universities in Sierra Leone have earned international awards for developing innovative technology application in healthcare and agricultural solution at the 2022 UNESCO-India-Africa Hackathon.

The students got their prizes after participating in the 36-hour non-stop Hackathon in Delhi, India held from 22nd -25th November, this year.

The hackathon is an annual  event that brings together students, educators, teachers and the research community of India and its African partners to, tackle common challenges faced by their countries and serves as a facilitator for cultural “amalgamation.”

The students were joined by young innovators from  22 countries to find technology- based solutions to issues relating to education, agriculture, health, energy, water, and other socio-economic challenges.

The awards were presented by the Vice President of India, and UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar, at the Guatam Budha University Auditorium in New Delhi.

A delegation from Sierra Leone comprising 13 students’ innovators, director of technology and innovation, senior lecturers and researchers from University of Sierra Leone, was led by the Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, to the event.

22 countries participated in this year’s Hackathon .
