The Ministry of Youth Affairs has disbursed over Le 1 Billion for the construction of 70 fishing boats for youths. The boats will be used to revive the moribund Youth in Fisheries project.
The Ministry made the announcement in a press release on Friday. The amount represents 30% of funds for the construction of the boats.
The project was given to seven national contractors.
The Youth-in-Fisheries project will benefit coastal communities in Bonthe, Pujehun, Moyamba, Kambia, Port Loko, and the Western Area.
The ministry also noted that Paramount Chiefs, Chairmen and Mayors of Local Councils and other stakeholders should ensure the construction process due in three months was completed in a timely and durable manner.
"It is against this backdrop that the Ministry of Youth Affairs is calling on all Stakeholders to monitor the construction process in achieving the quality work it deserves and value for taxpayers money'', the ministry says in a press release.
The project is among many in the ministry which came under scrutiny at the Commissions of Inquiry. When the boats are completed, the Ministry plans to hand over the boats to young fishermen while they pay back for the boats over a fixed period.
