Sierra Leone telecomms gets new boss

  • Daniel Kaitibie

By Mabinty M. Kamara

President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Daniel Kaitibie as the new Director General of the National Telecommunication Commission (NATCOM). Kaitibie, who was the deputy director general until his new appointment, replaces Maxwell Massaquoi.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement from State House.

It is not clear why Massaquoi was sacked. But he just returned from a month long suspension, amidst murmur about bad blood between him and Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray.

Kaitibie brings with him a very rich experience. He worked as the Head of the Directorate of Studies and Head of Business Information Technology at Njala University. He is currently a PhD candidate in Health Information Systems, a partnership course between Njala University and the University of Illinois in the United States.

Kaitibie will now have to deal with ongoing debate on tariff and bonuses. The issue has been a major subject of debate this month after the National Revenue Authority commenced implementation of the 2020 Finance Act on mobile companies.

The issue is also the subject of a petition by the pressure group, the Renaissance Movement of Sierra Leone, which is calling on the government to reverse the decision that it says has had a major impact on the masses.
