Sierra Leone ranked hungriest in West Africa

  • Dr Sam Sesay, MInister of Agriculture and Food Security

The Global Hunger Index 2013 says there is “alarming” hunger in Sierra Leone despite a nearly 10% points improvement since 1990. The country lies in 13th place out of the 56 hungriest countries in the world and tops West Africa. The index, released this month, was calculated for 120 developing countries and countries in transition, 56 of them with a “worse hunger situation”. Sierra Leone scored 22.8, an improvement from 28.4 in 2005. Burundi, Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia are among the countries with worse hunger levels than Sierra Leone. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Sam Sesay would not respond to our calls and SMS to gauge his reaction to the report.  We will bring you a government reaction to the ranking as soon as we get it.
