The Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Motema Police Division in Kono District has ended a Sexual and Gender Based Violence Campaign (SGBV) with a football gala over the weekend.
The gala which featured teams from places like; Ngayah, Motema, Sembakoro and Yengema under the purview of the Motema Police Division was meant to sensitize youths in the area about the dangers of SGBV.
One of the organizers of the gala, Sergeant Andrew Kamara, told Politico that it was very important to target youths with messages about SGBV, using football.
“Using football which attracts them would help us to sensitize them on the dangers of SGBV and penalties attached to committing such offences,” he said.
The Sergeant said that cases like wife battering, indecent assault and rape were on a steady increase in the area and that all these acts were mostly perpetrated by young people.
The tournament was won by Ngayah FC after they defeated Motema FC 6-5 on post match penalties. The match which was played at the Parker Mini Stadium attracted a fairly decent turnout.
A sum of Le 230, 000 was presented to the winners and 120, 000 to the runners up.
Sergeant Andrew Kamara said he planned to replicate such gala across other towns to preach the same message across to other youths.
