Sierra Leone Police, MPs dialogue

Parliament on Wednesday engaged top officials of the Sierra Leone police on information-sharing and the need for continuous dialogue.

Deputy Speaker, Chernor Bah said the police and parliament needed to work together in to enhance mutual development, adding that the two institutions co-existed to maintain peace and security in the country.

Leader of the House, Ibrahim Bundu, MP, said the House and the constabulary had specific roles as prescribed in the national constitution with the former making laws and the latter enforcing them.

Minority leader, Dr Bernadette Lahai, MP, appreciated the police officers’ coming to parliament and interacting with them. She said a good relationship would allow For coexistence.

Inspector General, Francis Munu said the police were part of the executive arm of government and that they had "the largest constituency in the country".

He said that every week he would engage all his Assistant Inspectors-General and other senior officials to map out the way forward on how to manage the security situation in the country. The IG noted that parliament needed to capacitate the police to operate effectively.
