The Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB) has announced the commencement of a preliminary investigation over an alleged shooting incident by a Police Constable attached to the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Lahai Lawrence Leema.
“The Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB) wishes to inform the public that it has commenced a preliminary investigation into reports of an alleged shooting incident that took place on Saturday 1st February, 2020 along Minna Drive in Freetown, involving Police Constable (PC) Aiah Fengai attached to the Hon. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Lahai Lawrence Leema,” a press statement published by IPCB reads in part.
Alie Forster was reportedly shot by Aiah Fengai. The victim sustained serious injuries in the left leg.
The press statement further stated that Regulation 3 (1) (c) of the IPCB Regulations, 2013 (Constitutional Instrument No. 11 of 2013) mandated it to investigate, among others, a shooting incident where a police officer had discharged a firearm or killed a person.
“Consequently, the IPCB has initiated this investigation pursuant to regulation 9 of IPCB Regulations, 2013 with a view to determining the role and/or conduct of the Sierra Leone Police Personnel involved,” the release reads.
IPCB promised to inform the public of any developments on the matter.
