Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has pledged US$500,000 to the African Union Humanitarian Fundraising conference at the 16th Extraordinary Conference and Summit.
The pledge which was made on Friday 27 May 2022 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea according to a report by the State House Communications Unit is a show of the country’s commitment to addressing Climate Change issues and other humanitarian challenges in Africa.
“Sierra Leone fully supports the setting up of the Africa Humanitarian Agency, and Sierra Leone is pledging $500,000. Thank you,” said President Bio.
The summit deliberated on efforts by African leaders to address the current humanitarian challenges in the continent, that was now being exacerbated by the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and disasters across the continent, and to identify durable solutions to address the current humanitarian challenges, especially of humanitarian financing and those that contributed to post-conflict recovery, peace, and development.
Speaking at the summit, President Bio highlighted that Sierra Leone had since gone ahead to establish the National Disaster Management Agency to primarily deal with disasters of any sort, saying that his government believed it should take care of their internally displaced and distressed persons because of manmade and natural disasters.
The Assembly meetings for two extraordinary summits of the AU commenced on the 27th and ended on Saturday, 28th May, with the Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and Pledging Conference, and the Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes in Africa, respectively.
The Assembly also considered the agendas of the two summits, the Assembly Declaration of the Extraordinary Summit and Pledging Conference, as well as the Malabo Declaration on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa.
The report of the Chairperson on terrorism and unconstitutional changes of government in Africa was also presented to the meeting.
