  • Kabineh Kallon, Transport Minister

By Saio Marrah

The Leader of the opposition All People’s Congress Party (APC) in parliament, Chernor Maju Bah has expressed concern over the safety of commuters on the country’s road network. He said the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority appears unable to minimize the many road accidents taking place in the country.

Speaking in parliament on Thursday 11th March 2021, he said drivers mostly park everywhere on roads even in areas reserved to drop off passengers. This he said has been the cause of frequent accidents. “The attitude of our road users is deteriorating by the day and the SLRSA is responsible. Lives are not safe, accidents are on the increase.

He said he had engaged the road safety boss on three occasions on the issue but nothing has changed.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Aviation, Ambrose Maada Lebbie said he had been informed of the issues and that he had summoned the Minister of Transport and Aviation to meet his Committee on but he said the deputy minister of that ministry lost his father and they were attending to the funeral. He said the meeting will be re-scheduled.

The Acting Speaker accepted the excuse but warned against accepting excuses except if it has to do with the summoning of the head of a particular MDA because “when parliament summons heads of MDAs, the only reason that is worthwhile would be either that the minister is attending cabinet or that the head of the MDA is part of a cabinet subcommittee or that the head of MDA had been summoned by the president - those are the only excuses apart from the moral ones”.
