In his effort to keep the Media and Civil Society Organizations abreast with the activities of the government in communities outside Freetown, the Minister of Information and Communication Mohamed Rahman Swarray has on the 5th March 2021 engaged the two groups in Kenema.
The Minister said the joint press briefing was part of President Julius Maada Bio’s agenda to enhance inclusive participation of the civil society organisations in good governance in good governance. He spoke on a range of issues including that of the condition of service for teachers and the question of the delay in processing pin codes. According to him, “Some teachers may have problem of mismatch of names in their documentation. But government is patiently addressing those concerns of teachers to make sure that the free quality education becomes achievable as a strong objective of this government. This government is determined to improve on human capital development”.
He added that the government will not treat the issue of teachers with levity since human capital development of any nation is based on the standard of education and teachers are the cornerstone of good education.
The Minister called on teachers and other stakeholders in the education sector to trust in the leadership of the current government in transforming the governance system that had collapse for years.
He also said that the government has prioritized the issues of science teachers in schools based on the fact that most schools do not have science teachers, an issue he described as “something of concerns to government because “no country will progress in this technological world where the science sector is weak especially when talking about digitalization. We have learnt that when science teachers attain the age of retirement no other science teacher will be available to take over, therefore government wants to extend the retirement age for sciences teachers after the normal retirement age to groom up young colleagues”.
He assured the public that the issue of the transformation of the eastern polytechnic in Kenema has gone up to parliament, saying it was a key move towards the actualization of that objective.
Speaking on infrastructural development, he said the President has instructed the finance minister to scout for resources for the Kenema- Zimmi road project and assured the people of Kenema and Eastern region as a whole of government’s determination to fulfil all the manifesto promises made to the people of this country.
