Sierra Leone finally bags TRANSCO CLSG deal

 Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire have finally signed the TRANSCO CLSG project in Abidjan on Wednesday 1st December 2021. The project which seeks to import electricity from Côte d’Ivoire to Sierra Leone is set to benefit the Southeastern cities of Bo and Kenema.

Sierra Leone’s Energy Minister Alhaji Kanja Sesay said the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement is a manifestation of the country’s effort to import electricity from Côte d’Ivoire, noting that the symbolic signing is a climax of all the discussions that the two countries have had over the years with regards to the project.  

Whiles addressing his Côte d’Ivoire counterpart and entourage, Sesay said the francophone country has made the sub-region proud, stating that the country now has the capacity to export electricity to sister countries. “Today, we have witnessed the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement which has now become the symbol that will bind us together in respect of our utilities -CI Energies and EDSA in the presence of the two Ministers of Energy,” he said.

He expressed appreciation and delight for finally signing the deal, adding that the day is a historic one.  Sesay also commended Sierra Leoneans for being supportive, patient and understanding.

The Ivorian Minister of Mining, Oil, and Energy, Thomas Camara explained that their country is committed to pursuing the project and ensuring regional integration that will make way for the exportation of electricity to Sierra Leone. He added that the project would enhance a bilateral relationship between the two nations.  

Camara said he was impressed with the high-powered delegation from Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leonean Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh had before the signing on the 30th November 2021 visited President Alhassane Ouattara and presented a letter given to him by President Julius Madaa Bio in relation to the TRANSCO CLSG electrification project.  

Revealing the purpose of his visit, the VP explained that he joined the delegation as a special envoy of President Bio to express the importance of the project to the country.

President Ouattara assured the VP of their support to ensure that they support Sierra Leone to achieve energy security. Ouattara asked his energy minister to establish a cordial partnership with his counterpart to make sure the project is signed and ensure that Bo and Kenema enjoy uninterrupted electricity.
