Sierra Leone announces new water rate

The Sierra Leone Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (SLEWRC) has announced new tariffs and prices for all categories in the supplying and selling of water across the country.

The new tariffs and prices will come into effect on the 15th of June 2022, according to the Director-General of the SLEWRC, Dr. Emmanuel Mannah, upon presenting the current and approved prices yesterday 2nd June 2022 at the weekly press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communications in Freetown.

For sachet water producers, the factory price is Le 4,500 per bundle, while distributors and wholesalers are to sell at Le 5,000 per bundle, whilst for retailers it is Le 6,000 per bundle.

Prices were also announced for water bowsers of Guma Valley Water Company carrying various litres based on distance and use.

A chart showing areas of supply or distribution was displayed, covering central or in-bounds, out-bounds notably Aberdeen, Lumley, Juba, Kissy, Wellington, Calaba Town, and Allen Town. Mountain areas include Wilberforce, Hill Station, Imatt, Regent, Leicester and Gloucester. Western Rural 1  has Goderich, Hamilton, Mambo, Mile 13, Sussex, No. 2, Jui, Grafton, and Hastings. Western Rural 2 consists of Yams Farm, Devil Hole, Waterloo, Tokeh, and York).

On bowser carrying water  supplying 20,000 litres – which is the highest – in Western Rural 2, whose areas are far from central Freetown, the new approved price for residential is Le 1,400,000, while for commercial it is Le 1,600,000.

In supplying 6,000 litres which is the lowest – in central or in-bounds, for areas in central Freetown, the approved price for residential is Le 400,000, while for  commercial it is Le 460,000.

SLEWRC is an independent regulatory commission responsible for the approval of tariffs in both the electricity and water sectors in Sierra Leone.
