Sierra Leone is 4th most peaceful country in Africa

Sierra Leone is ranked the 4th most peaceful country in Africa, according to the Global Peace Index for 2021. Mauritius tops the list followed by Ghana and Botswana. The Gambia occupy 5th position, while Sierra Leone’ neighbours Liberia and Guinea are 14th and 17th respectively in the rankings compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), with headquarters in Sydney, Australia and branches in the United States and Oxford in the UK.

Iceland has for many years now taken the number one position as the most peaceful country in the world, followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia.

 Emphasis was on nations that were most peaceful and most dangerous to live in.  South Sudan was the least peaceful country in Africa followed by Somalia, DR Congo, Central African Republic and Mali. Globally Afghanistan is the least country in terms of peace.

United States of America dropped 2 places to 122 while the UK rose 6 places to 33. Yemen is the least peaceful nation in the Middle East this year, overtaking Syria.

IEP is a not-for – profit think-tank that conducts research for human development.

 23 indicators were used in determining the rankings, shared in three categories of safety and security, domestic and international conflict, and militarization.
