Sierra Leone’s main opposition party leaders at loggerheads

  • Alfred Peter Kargbo, Interim Chairman
  • Abdul Kargbo, Interim Secretary General

By Nasratu Kargbo

A Press Release signed by the Interim Transitional Governance Committee’s (ITGC) Secretary General Abdul Kargbo, has accused the Chairman of the Committee Alfred Peter Conteh of misleading the public.

ITGC is part of the All People’s Congress (APC) party. The release dated 20th August 2022, distanced a faction of the committee from a press release dated the previous day- 19th August 2022.

“At this point, therefore, the committee wishes to welcome the disapproval by party members and the general public to the deliberate and continuous attempts by Alfred Peter Conteh, who, under the guise of chairman, is in the habit of publishing misleading press releases purporting to have been published by the ITGC”, it reads in part.

The latest statement says the committee has asked their party members and members of the public to perceive the chairman’s actions as forms of distraction and as an attempt to undermine the orders of the high court of Justice Adrian Fisher of 28th April 2022.

Speaking on another issue, the committee acknowledged that they have received objections made by the members of the public through the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) on a publication made by the party in relation to their Rules of Procedures and Regulations for the conduct of their Lower Level Elections.

The party has promised that they will ensure that they respond to all the objections made by the nine objectors, by serving copies for them on each objection through the PPRC.

Explaining how the procedures shall be undertaken, the release explained that the PPRC shall conduct hearings on objections that were made and make their ruling. “The commission will further cause the Rules of Procedures and Regulations for Lower Level Elections to be published for fourteen (14) days in the Sierra Leone Gazette as required” it further explained.

In addition, the statement explained that after the above-mentioned procedures, the Transitional Interim Independent Elections Management Committee (TIEMC) will after a count of 60 days, commence the conduction of all lower-level elections. It was also stated that they have sent the list of the 25 TIEMC nominees to the PPRC as ordered by the high court.

It added that they have been actively preparing to participate in the forthcoming National Voters Registration scheduled for Saturday 3rd September to Tuesday 4th October 2022.

The committee, therefore, called on all Sierra Leoneans that are eligible to vote, to ensure that they register in the nearest registration centre.

Politico was unable to reach Conteh’s side for reaction to the unfolding events.
