Rotary Club Sierra Leone supports King George Old People's Home

By Chernor Alimamy Kamara

The Freetown Rotary Club has over the weekend supported the King George Memorial Home for the aged with various food items and materials worth NLE 20,000 (twenty thousand New Leones).

Parboiled rice, cooking oil, and assorted food items and toiletries were presented.

The event saw the serving by Rotarians of residents with special foods and listening to their issues and stories. Members of the club look forward to this “hands-on” encounter each year with residents, saying it provides a concrete expression of their care for humanity apart from the weekly contributions for the home raised each week.

The club pointed out that several other organizations that have been supporting the home as its annual subvention from the Government are inadequate to service all the needs and demands of the residents and administrative staff.

It could be recalled that Rotary started through the vision of Paul Harris and a few friends in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1905 and recently celebrated the 118th anniversary of its founding. Its members are drawn from a diverse background of professionals who then exchange ideas and support projects around the world while forging meaningful lifelong friendships.

Rotary club members  have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities around the world and its support to the home is just one of many examples of it work in Sierra Leone.

The King George VI Memorial Home is the only special support home for the aged in the country. It was formerly located at Kissy Dock Yard during the Second World War but was relocated to its present Grafton site not long ago.

Rotary Clubs around the world are said to have engaged in various charitable and service-related activities. They are one of the largest service organizations in the world and was started to "provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.”
