The Chairman of QGroup, a subsidiary company of mobile telecommunications operator, Qcell network in Sierra Leone has promised to bring more of his companies operating in other parts of Africa to Sierra Leone as a way of giving back to the country in which he was educated.
Chairman Mohamed Jah, a Gambian-Sierra Leonean was speaking by a telecast video at the launch of Qcell Sierra Leone’s latest product, 4G Lite in Freetown on Thursday, 11th March 2021.
He said the group owns 12 other companies operating in different sectors of the economy in the Gambia, such as banks, media, transports, entertainment, manufacturing amongst others and was working on extending to Sierra Leone in the same way he did with the telecommunication company, Qcell.
While extending gratitude to the government of President Julius Maada Bio for according him the necessary support to extend his business to Sierra Leone, he challenged other Sierra Leoneans to consider investment ideas that can better Sierra Leone and Africa as a whole. “I don’t only have Qcell, I have 12 different companies in different sectors of the economy and we believe that one by one those companies can also be in Sierra Leone. To show our people of Sierra Leone that if Mohamed Jah who graduated from Fourah Bay College with just a first degree can do that, others can also do it,” he said.
Chairman Jah said he “believes that there are so many Sierra Leoneans that can do the same thing. I started this company in my bedroom, today we are the biggest employers in the Gambia and also among the top taxpayers in the country. I think Africa is moving and I believe there is the opportunity for that.”
The Qcell telecommunication company, he said started operations in Sierra Leone in early 2019 with an objective of becoming the best network service provider in the country and making data and voice call cheaper and affordable to its customers. He said these objectives have been achieved within the first two years of operations in Sierra Leone with coverage across the country because “we are not in Sierra Leone to make money but to give back to the country and serve the country.”
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Qcell Sierra Leone Karthik Jayamani said the latest product launch will ensure a high speed and affordable internet service to smartphone users. He added that it will aid learners to engage in distance education programs and get learning materials available on different sites.
The 4G Lite network was launched by the Chairman of the national telecommunications regulator, NATCOM, Commissioner Joseph Blell. He applauds the company for the progress made so far in just 24 months period of operation.
