Politico reporter freed

Twenty-four hours after she was jailed for one week by the Court Martial for contempt, Politico's Crime Reporter, Aminata Phidelia Alie was freed on Tuesday afternoon.

It followed a series of phone calls to and a meeting held with Attorney General, Frank Kargbo by FreeMedia Group, the publishers of Politico.

This was also supported by the President of Women in The Media (WIMSAL), Asmaa James who also held a meeting with the Attorney General.

Politico also spoke to the Judge Advocate, Otto During who said he had agreed to release the first female journalist to be sent to jail in Sierra Leone through a due process.

It followed the subpoenaing on Monday of the entire editorial team of Politico for an article deemed to be in contempt of the court.

Aminata looked in high spirit when she walked out of prison as she was welcomed by the Politico Editor-in-chief. She headed straight to the office where she shared her 24-hour experience in jail with her colleagues, looking unperturbed.

Even though admitting that mistakes were made in the offending article, Politico expressed sadness that the reporter had to be sent to jail, preferring an apology which the paper has already made.
