Parliament Approves Lands Minister and Four Others

Lawmakers have unanimously approved the newly appointed Minister of Lands and Country Planning Dr. Turad Senesie and four other appointments recently announced by President Julius Maada Bio. The report of the Parliamentary committee on appointments and public service chaired by the leader of government business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma also gave a nod to Dr. Jonathan Titus Williams to serve as Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development.

Dr. Sao-kpato Hannah Isata Max-Kyne also got approved to serve as the Commissioner of the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) with Jimmy Batilo Songa as her Deputy. Pa. Komrabai Maylie Kamara is to serve as Member of the Board of Directors, Sierra Leone Airport Authority (SLAA).

Commenting on the nominees, Opposition Whip Hassan Sesay said the approval of presidential nominees is a call to national duty and praised the appointment of the NaCSA boss as a show of respect for gender balance and urged others to always give women the support they require.

Whilst advising the Deputy NaCSA Commissioner to give his unreserved support to the Commissioner, he used the occasion to remind her of serving the nation sincerely by doing the needful in respect of market projects.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Sengepoh Solomon Thomas praised the work of the committee on appointments adding that all the nominees have a background of outstanding performance.

Citing the chaotic incidences of land grabbing over the years, Hon. Thomas said: “I know Dr. Turad Senesie as a perfectionist and I’m pretty sure that he will heal the wounds of that Ministry.”

Committee Chairman for NaCSA, Dr. Roland Kargbo commended President Bio for appointing the nominees and urged them to change the drive in light of better performance, adding that he was pleased with the appointment of NaCSA's new Commissioners and Minister of Lands.

P.C Bai Kurr Kanagbaro Sanka III of Tonkolili District buttressed the position of the Deputy Speaker on dubious attitudes by the citizenry relating to land and pleaded with the nominees to think Sierra Leone.

Commending the Minister of Lands for his good attributes and competence, he passionately pleaded with the Minister of Lands to put stringent measures in place to curb rampant wildfires in the country.

Leader of the main Opposition APC Chernor R. M. Bah said the nominees had good CVs but added that performance in new offices matters and admonished them to serve in the best interest of the country.

Leader of Government Business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma stressed on the incompetence demonstrated by some previous nominees that has affected the progress of the country.

He commended the new NaCSA Commissioner for astute leadership in national service and advised her to put the records straight with regards policy and transformational team work. He called on MPs to embark on effective and efficient oversight on issues relating to land.

Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu extended congratulatory messages to the nominees and advised them to work in accordance with the confidence reposed in them by the President and the Parliament of Sierra Leone.
