OCTEA to pay workers

OCTEA workers in Kono

Octea mining company in the diamond rich district of Kono, east of Sierra Leone, has agreed to pay some 51 dismissed workers bringing to an end a long-standing impasse around severance packages.

The company, the largest diamond miner in the country, reached the agreement after negotiations involving the ministry of labour, employment and social security.

The men were sacked after a series of protest actions sparked by grievances against the company’s working conditions and pay last year. Some of the clashes have led to bloodletting.

Octea is owned by an Israeli investor. It is currently in court over unpaid royalties to the Koidu City Council.
