No guidelines for cybercrime – Police witness

By Saio Marrah

Cybercrime Investigator Detective Inspector, Mohamed Jusu attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters has said in court that he was not aware of any guidelines to be followed when investigating cybercrime in the country.

The Police witness said this during cross-examination by Lawyer Elvis T. Enoh at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court in Freetown on Friday 15th September 2023.

He pointed out that the Cyber Security and Crime Act of 2021, makes provision for guidelines when dealing with cases of cyber-crimes.

Inspector Jusu was testifying in relation to three counts of cyber-related offences levied against a 21-year-old Holland-based Safinatu Sesay, who was said to have between the 4th of June and 3rd August, 2023, sent grossly offensive messages through social media(Facebook) through an account name ‘Sia Rose’ to the victim, Major Amadu Ahmed Kargbo.

Jusu said he recalled on 21st August when a flash drive was handed over to him to transcribe and analyze.

He said upon receiving the drive in respect of the matter before the court, he was able to listen to a thirty-minute voice note recording, and that he copied the screenshot pictures, which were also handed over to him for inspection.

“I transferred the audio to a flash drive and I carefully listened to the audio messages. I used the software voice analysis, which says the audio messages were not tampered with. I compiled the flash drive as evidence,” He testified

After a bail application by Lawyer Enoh, the presiding Magistrate granted bail conditions of two sureties each with 100,000 thousand New Leones.

He said they should also be residents in Freetown with the new National Civil Registration Authority Identity Card, and that they should be above the age of 40 years.

The case continues on 25th September this year.
