Njala welcomes over 200 into distance-learning programme

Nyala University has matriculated 211 new students who have gained admission into the college for the 2020/2021 academic year.

The ceremony, which was held on Thursday 5th August 2020, marks the official welcoming and conclusion of the admission process for students who have enrolled for distance learning programmes in Teachers Certificate, Higher Teachers Certificate, Bachelor’s Degree and Post Graduate deploma in Education.

Welcoming the new students to the university, the Dean of Education, Professor Adly O. Johnson, advised the matriculants to conduct themselves responsibly, noting that they were representing the university and so anything they did would come back to the university.

"Education is to change one’s life, education is not only for you the students to benefits, but the nation should benefits from your education," she said.

She noted that distance education had a lot of advantages and so she said students should make use of the opportunity given to them.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Bo campus, Professor Mohamed Syed Fofana, congratulated the matriculants and encouraged them to take their studies seriously.

"This matriculation ceremony marks your official entry into Njala University. It is a conditional gathering to formally admit you the deserving and qualified candidates by administering the matriculation oath. The matriculation makes you full member of the university upon the fulfilment of all the necessary admission requirements. At this matriculation ceremony today," he stated.

Prof. Fofana encouraged students to be disciplined, noting being disciplined is an essential element for better education and that it helps students to respect authorities.

"Njala University encouraged registered associations and clubs approved by University administration to operate in the university. Religious and high moral social groups that help to mold the character of our students are permitted to operate. The university does not tolerate the activities of any antisocial groups, like membership of cult groups, operating on the campus. The university will not hesitate to summarily expel any defaulter. Please do not succumb to any threat to join any antisocial group," he warmed.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor further encouraged students to feel free and register their concerns to him, saying that his office was open to them to bring matters of concern to him.

 Manager for the Social Mobilization for DECOVER in Bo 

District, Eric Jumu, admonished  the gathering to be aware of the existence of COVID-19 in the country, even though he said Bo District had gone for two weeks without recording new cases. 

He called on  all to adhere to the government’s COVID-19 restriction and prevention regulations, such as the hand washing exercise, the use of  facemask and hand sanitizer.

"It is now mandatory in this country that once you are in a public place, you must use facemask, failure will attract a fine of five hundred thousand leones or you go for six months imprisonment,” he said.

According to the university officials, other constituent centers of the institution, such as Kono, Bonthe, Pujehun will also hold their matriculation ceremony soon.
