The Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, School of Natural Resources Management at Njala University, last Friday opened a new living lab which is a new technology method of Agriculture in an enclosed place.
The living lab has varieties of agricultural produce with integrated and circular technologies for sustainable city/region food systems in Africa.
Speaking about the project, the Coordinator for the living lab, Dr. Olufemi Julius Olapade noted that he got one Million Euros funding from the European Union (EU) to boost the project. He encouraged people to come for the official launch of the lab for them to see how it operates.
He also said that there are five other countries to have living labs that are contributing to food systems. He added that what operates in the living lab is different from what exists in the traditional method. He invited other players in the agricultural sector to learn about the work they have done in bringing such innovations.
Dr. Olapade called on students to make good use of the technology as it will help them advance in their studies.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Njala University, Professor Mohamed Bah said that the University is contributing to the food system of the country. He informed the gathering that the lab targets both crops and animals.
“When we talk about food, we talk about accessibility, affordability, availability, and utilization,” he said.
He was impressed with the composition of the living lab on campus, saying the school of natural resource management has raised the bar higher.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma stated that the demonstration by the school has clearly shown that Njala University means business as it aims to make Sierra Leone compete with other universities across the globe.
He expressed hope to see the display of every school in their next convocation in February 2025.
“This is not an easy task for the Germans to believe in you and give you One million Euros for a competitive project development,” said Professor Koroma.
