Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma has been appointed Principal for Njala University for a three years period starting in September 2022. Before this appointment as Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Koroma was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Njala Campus and Pro-Chancellor for Njala University.
In his 25 years at Njala, Professor Koroma has served as Chairman of the University Internal Scoring Committee and represented the University as a council member of the Statistics Sierra Leone Council while providing consultancy services with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) among others.
Speaking to Politico on the appointment, Claude Dimoh President of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Njala said his organization welcomes the appointment because “we have been yearning for this. We have waited too long to have a substantive VC&P. We believe Njala is now on the right path. We are certainly going to grow with the New Principal", ASA President noted.
Dimoh spoke about the many “challenges, especially with backlogs payments that we hope the new principal will come and look into it. What his predecessors started, he should continue because it is in the interest of the welfare of the staff of Njala University.
Describing Prof. Koroma as homegrown, Dimoh said the new principal “understands the problems, he can perform well and we trust him”. He noted that “the appointment went through the actual process. I was part of the search committee. It was done in the best interest of the people of this country because the president gave an assignment that the committee did through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). It is a credible one".
The new VC&P was not available for comment as we went to press.
