Njala sets to offer COL distance and open learning

By Saio Marrrah

With the signing of an agreement between Njala University and Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to provide support towards Open and Distance Learning (ODL), and an Open Educational Resource (OER), the university is set to offer COL distance and open learning.

This is according to the Communications Unit of Njala in a statement released over the weekend.

The agreement reportedly signed on Wednesday14 December this year is said aimed at developing employability practice at the university and benefit staff of the institution by educating, empowering and supporting them.

This in turn is said expected to impact on the students by increasing access through openness and improving employability capacity for them.

The goal of the six month project is to build ODS capacity to effectively meet the university’s educational challenges, which can be achieved through the development of university policies, strategic plans, and operational framework and the development of ODL technical skills.

The Adviser of Higher Education at COI, Dr. Jako Olivier, was said noted that the agreement is in line with the on-going engagement with Tertiary Education Commission for the development of a national ODL and OER policy.

The Director of Information and Communication Technology at  Njala , Thomas Songu, highlighted key issues such as increasing education stock, improving its distribution in terms of equity  and  adjustment to the needs of economy and the employment structure , and making sure that education is of high quality in terms of usable skills.

He said all these are required since the process is interactive and cumulative. Thus he said the processes can be facilitated more effectively by the development of more flexible and open educational system.
